Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of New Mexico, P.A.
August in Albuquerque always carries a particular energy — the monsoon rains rolling in over the Sandia Mountains each afternoon, the smell of damp desert earth, and that unmistakable mix of summer’s end and a new school year just around the corner. For those of us at OMSA New Mexico, this time of year also brings a familiar rhythm in our clinic: families wrapping up summer before the academic calendar takes over, and young adults seizing what may be their last window of downtime before college or a new semester begins. That rhythm was very much alive this August as we served eleven patients from the 87108 ZIP code and the broader Albuquerque area.
Of those eleven visits, the majority involved surgical extractions — seven in total — reflecting the kind of complex dental situations that often build quietly over time and finally get addressed when schedules allow a proper recovery period. Summer, with its slower pace for many households, genuinely is one of the best times to tackle procedures that require a few days of rest. We also completed three wisdom tooth removals this month, which comes as no surprise. Every August, we see a meaningful uptick in wisdom tooth cases across Albuquerque, and this year was no exception. College students heading back to campus, high school seniors preparing for a big year, and young adults entering the workforce all tend to prioritize this procedure now, knowing that managing an impacted or problematic wisdom tooth during a busy semester is far more disruptive than addressing it during a summer break.
Rounding out August’s procedures, we placed one dental implant for a patient in the Albuquerque area — a reminder that restorative care is very much part of our mission here at OMSA New Mexico. Implants represent one of the most meaningful long-term investments a person can make in their oral health, and we take great pride in delivering that level of care to our community with precision and compassion.
From a community health standpoint, August is a month worth paying attention to across Albuquerque. Back-to-school physicals, sports clearances, and academic requirements sometimes draw attention away from dental health, but oral wellness is just as foundational to a young person’s readiness to learn and thrive. Untreated infections, impacted teeth, or long-deferred extractions can quietly affect concentration, nutrition, sleep, and overall well-being. If a family member has been putting off a consultation — whether for a wisdom tooth that’s been nagging, a tooth that needs to come out, or a conversation about implants — the transition out of summer is actually an ideal moment to act before life gets busier.
It is genuinely meaningful work to serve the people of this community, and each month I am reminded of how much trust our neighbors place in us when they walk through our doors. We do not take that lightly. Whether you are coming in for something routine or something more complex, our team at OMSA New Mexico is here to walk alongside you with expertise, honesty, and care.
If you or someone you love in the Albuquerque area is ready to take that next step in oral health, I warmly invite you to reach out to us at OMSA New Mexico. We would be honored to help you move forward with confidence and comfort.
