Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of New Mexico, P.A.
August in Albuquerque always carries a particular kind of energy — the tail end of summer monsoons, the smell of roasting green chile drifting through the air, and that unmistakable anticipation as families begin preparing for a new school year. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon serving this community, I find this time of year to be one of the most meaningful on the calendar, because it reminds me how closely oral health is tied to the rhythms of everyday life here in the 87109 corridor and the broader Albuquerque area.
This August, our practice welcomed fourteen patients from the local area, and the procedural picture that emerged tells a story I recognize every single year. Of the work we performed, eight procedures involved wisdom tooth extractions — and that number comes as no surprise. Late summer is consistently one of the busiest seasons for third molar care, and for good reason. College students return home before heading back to campus, high school graduates are in that window between finishing school and starting a new chapter, and parents who have been meaning to address a teenager’s impacted wisdom teeth finally find the schedule flexibility to make it happen. The back-to-school season in Albuquerque is, in a very real sense, also back-to-the-dentist season.
Beyond wisdom teeth, the majority of our August procedures — twenty-nine surgical extractions in total — reflect the kind of complex oral surgery needs that often build quietly over time before requiring decisive intervention. Surgical extractions differ from routine removals in that they involve teeth that are broken down, impacted, or positioned in ways that require careful surgical technique and recovery planning. When I look at those numbers across our patient community, I see people who trusted us with some of their most vulnerable moments, and I take that responsibility seriously. Ensuring that Albuquerque residents have access to skilled, compassionate surgical care close to home is what drives everything we do at OMSA New Mexico.
There is a broader seasonal lesson worth sharing with our neighbors this month. Summer heat, busy schedules, and changes in routine — travel, irregular meals, increased sugary drink consumption — can quietly accelerate dental problems that might otherwise progress more slowly. By the time discomfort becomes impossible to ignore, what might have been a simpler procedure can evolve into something more involved. My consistent encouragement to families throughout the Albuquerque area is to treat oral pain or swelling as something worth addressing promptly rather than waiting it out. Early intervention almost always means easier recovery, less time away from work or school, and better long-term outcomes.
As we move toward the fall, I am proud to continue serving the people of this community alongside the dedicated team at OMSA New Mexico.
