Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Associates of New Mexico, P.A.
August in Albuquerque always carries a particular kind of energy — the monsoon rains roll in over the Sandia Mountains in the afternoons, the green chile harvest is just around the corner, and there’s a palpable buzz in the air as families gear up for back-to-school season. For us here at OMSA New Mexico, that energy translates directly into our clinic, and this August was no exception. It was a busy, rewarding month, and I want to take a moment to share what we’re seeing across the community we’re so proud to serve.
This month, we welcomed eighteen patients from the 87111 ZIP code — a stretch of Albuquerque that encompasses some of our most established neighborhoods in the northeast heights. Among all the care we provided, wisdom tooth management was far and away the dominant need. We performed fifteen wisdom tooth extractions and ten surgical extractions this month, numbers that tell a story I recognize year after year. Summer and the back-to-school window are reliably among the busiest times for this type of procedure, and for good reason. Families with teenagers and young adults in college use the summer break strategically — they schedule wisdom tooth consultations and procedures while students are home, allowing for a week or two of recovery before the fall semester begins. It’s genuinely smart planning, and I always appreciate when families think ahead rather than waiting for pain or crowding to force the issue mid-semester.
We also completed three bone grafting procedures this August, which reflects something I find encouraging about the Albuquerque community: more people are arriving at consultations with a longer-term vision for their oral health. Bone grafting is most often performed in preparation for dental implants, and it requires patience — the graft needs time to integrate before the next phase of treatment can begin. The fact that patients are willing to invest in that process speaks to a growing awareness that oral health is not just about the immediate problem but about preserving the jaw structure and function for decades to come. I am genuinely proud to see that mindset taking root here.
From a seasonal standpoint, August is also a time when I encourage everyone — parents especially — to make oral health part of the back-to-school checklist. Sports physicals, eye exams, and immunizations rightly get attention, but a dental check-in, particularly for young people in their late teens and early twenties, can catch developing wisdom tooth issues before they become urgent. Third molars don’t always announce themselves with pain right away; impaction and crowding can develop silently. Early evaluation gives us options and, frankly, gives families more flexibility in scheduling around school and work calendars. Albuquerque has a wonderful tradition of community care, and I think of proactive oral health conversations as part of that same spirit.
Whether you’re a longtime resident of Albuquerque’s northeast heights or new to the 87111 area, my door — and my team’s door — is always open. At OMSA New Mexico, we are here not just to treat but to educate, support, and walk alongside you through whatever oral health journey you’re navigating. If you have questions about wisdom teeth, surgical extractions, bone grafting, or anything else in our scope of care, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us. We would be honored to help.
